Sai Sudharsan ruled out of India’s Test series against Sri Lanka due to injury

Sai Sudharsan has been ruled out of India‘s upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, which is scheduled to begin on August 15 in Galle. The top-order batter is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a foot niggle at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE). Despite initial optimism from the management regarding his availability, it is now considered unlikely that he will receive the necessary fitness clearances for the crucial fixtures.
Sudharsan’s absence creates an opening in the batting order, particularly at the No. 3 position, which he had occupied since his Test debut. His injury adds to a growing list of absentees for the Indian team ahead of an important World Test Championship assignment.
Potential Replacements Considered
With Sudharsan sidelined, Shaik Rasheed and Sarfaraz Khan have emerged as frontrunners to join the squad. Sarfaraz has reportedly been at the CoE for over a week for his fitness assessment, while Rasheed has been asked to report to the Bengaluru facility on Sunday. Rasheed recently toured with the India A team in Sri Lanka, contributing scores of 45, 63, and 20 in three innings.
The 21-year-old Rasheed has been on the selectors’ radar, with positive feedback from CoE coaches. He was also slated to participate in a specialist batter camp at the CoE, alongside players like R Smaran and Aman Mokhade. Sarfaraz Khan, known for his ability against spin and improved fitness, also remains in consideration, with some figures advising him to bat higher in the domestic circuit.
Another player, Ruturaj Gaikwad, is also in contention, though his recent performances for India A have not been as impactful. An official announcement from the Indian cricket board is anticipated to confirm Sudharsan’s replacement.
India’s Injury Concerns and WTC Implications
Sudharsan’s injury is not the only setback for India ahead of the Sri Lanka tour. Jasprit Bumrah, the team’s fast bowler, is also unavailable due to an injury sustained during an ODI series against England. Additionally, Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Washington Sundar have all been ruled out of the series due to injuries.
The increasing number of unavailable players has prompted the selectors and team management to explore their available resources more deeply. The Board of Control for Cricket in India had previously flagged uncertainty regarding Sudharsan’s availability when the squad was announced, stating his selection was subject to fitness clearance.
The two-Test series holds significant importance for the World Test Championship standings. India currently occupies fifth place, while Sri Lanka is sixth. The series offers both teams a chance to improve their positions in the race for the 2027 WTC Final. The absence of key players will test India’s squad depth as they aim to secure valuable WTC points.
Devdutt Padikkal could be a potential solution for the No. 3 position. He strengthened his case by scoring a century in an ongoing warm-up game. The final decision on the batting combination will depend on the team management’s strategy for the first Test.

The medical advice for Sudharsan recommends more time for biological healing and a gradual increase in rehabilitation, strength and conditioning, and cricket-specific loads. This cautious approach aims to reduce the risk of recurrence or further complications and protect his long-term performance.
