Pakistan seeks improvement for Asia Cup semi-final against Sri Lanka

Pakistan secures semi-final spot
Pakistan has advanced to the semi-finals of the Women’s Asia Cup, following a 72-run victory over Hong Kong, China. The match, held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Monday, saw Pakistan successfully defend a total of 143 runs. This win secured their place in the final four, setting up a semi-final clash against Sri Lanka on Friday.
The victory was largely propelled by spinner Nashra Sandhu, who delivered a record-breaking performance. Sandhu claimed six wickets, achieving the best T20I figures ever by a Pakistan bowler. Her spell was crucial in dismantling the Hong Kong, China batting lineup, which was eventually bowled out for 71 runs.
Pakistan captain Fatima Sana, for the third consecutive match, opted to bat first. This decision came after a previous seven-wicket loss to India at the same venue, where Pakistan recorded their lowest ever T20 international score. The team’s performance against Hong Kong, China aimed to address some of the issues from that earlier defeat.
Batting and bowling performances
The Pakistan innings began steadily, with openers Muneeba Ali and Shawaal Zulfiqaar establishing a 24-run partnership within three overs. However, Muneeba was dismissed early, bowled by Iqra Sahar. Gull Feroza, batting at number three, continued her challenging run in the tournament, being dismissed leg-before-wicket for three runs after two previous ducks.
Ayesha Zafar contributed a quick 26 runs off 19 balls, joining Shawaal at the crease. Shawaal Zulfiqaar played a significant role, constructing a well-paced knock of 47 runs off 35 balls. Her innings involved effective strike rotation and boundary hitting, providing a stable foundation for Pakistan. Despite a middle-overs wobble where Shawaal, Sadaf Shamas, and Eyman Fatima lost their wickets to Joyleen Kaur, captain Fatima Sana stabilised the innings with an unbeaten 24 runs. Along with Tuba Hassan, who scored 14 runs off 13 balls, they helped Pakistan reach a total of 143-8, which was considered above par on a challenging pitch.
In the bowling department, Pakistan started strongly. Fatima Sana and Sadia Iqbal claimed wickets in consecutive overs, leaving Hong Kong, China at 1-2 after two overs. Fatima bowled Mariko Hill, while Sadia dismissed Natasha Miles leg-before-wicket. Yasmin Daswani and Kary Chan then formed a 31-run partnership, offering some resistance for Hong Kong, China.

The introduction of Nashra Sandhu proved decisive. She took her first wicket by catching and bowling Daswani, breaking the partnership. Sandhu then proceeded to dismiss Marina Lamplough, Bibi, Shanzeen Shahzad, and Alison Siu, securing her maiden T20I five-wicket haul. She completed her exceptional performance by bowling Iqra Sahar, finishing with figures of 6-7. Nashra Sandhu was named player of the match for her outstanding contribution.
Looking ahead to the semi-finals
Despite the comprehensive win, Fatima Sana believes her team needs to improve in several aspects to overcome Sri Lanka in the knockout semi-final. She highlighted the need for better strike rotation and more partnerships in batting. The captain stated that the team plans to discuss these areas ahead of the crucial match.
Hong Kong, China, despite failing to secure a victory in their three matches, showed resilience. Captain Natasha Miles expressed pride in her team’s efforts, noting that playing against strong teams provided a valuable learning experience. Hong Kong, China narrowly missed a win against Thailand, losing by six runs in their first match of the tournament. The semi-final between Pakistan and Sri Lanka is scheduled for Friday.

The upcoming match against Sri Lanka, who remain unbeaten in the tournament, will be a significant test for Pakistan. The team’s ability to implement the discussed improvements in batting and maintain their disciplined bowling will be key to their success in the semi-final.
