Marcus Rashford to wear No. 14 shirt upon Manchester United return

Rashford’s Return and Squad Number
Marcus Rashford is set to return to Manchester United following his loan spell at Barcelona. His return to the squad comes after his involvement with England in the World Cup, which concluded with the final weekend of the tournament. He is expected to rejoin the team for the summer tour of northern Europe and could feature as early as Wednesday when United plays Leeds United in Dublin, Ireland.
During his time at Barcelona, Rashford’s No. 10 jersey at Old Trafford was reassigned to Matheus Cunha. According to reports from Fabrizio Romano, Rashford will now take the vacant No. 14 shirt. This is the same number he wore during his loan spell at Barcelona. The No. 9 shirt was also available, but the No. 14 was reportedly his preference.
Rashford has not played a competitive fixture for Manchester United since a Europa League match against Viktoria Plzen in December 2024.
History of the No. 14 Shirt and Future Role
Since the introduction of fixed jersey numbers in the Premier League in 1993, United’s No. 14 shirt has been worn by 10 permanent occupants. The shirt was open last season, having most recently been worn by Christian Eriksen during his time at Old Trafford. Notable players who have worn the No. 14 include Jesse Lingard and Javier Hernández. Andrei Kanchelskis, who was the first to wear it for the club in the division, is considered by some to be the most successful No. 14 in United’s history, having won two Premier League titles and being the top scorer for United in the 1994–95 season with 15 goals across all competitions.
Fabrizio Romano indicated that Rashford will be reintegrated into the Manchester United squad. This is expected to be the case unless an offer from a “top European club” materialises within the remaining three weeks of the transfer window. With two years remaining on his contract, re-establishing himself in Manchester appears to be his immediate path.
Rashford could play a significant role for United this season, particularly on the left wing. In the 2025–26 season, Cunha, who is naturally a No. 10 or striker, and Patrick Dorgu, who is transitioning from left-back, were the primary options for this position. While not a first-choice starter for Barcelona, Rashford contributed 28 goals and assists across all competitions last season. During his best season for United in the 2022–23 campaign, he recorded 30 goals, making him the only player in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era to achieve this milestone in a single season.

Transfer Outlook and Contract Status
Reports suggest that Rashford is likely to remain at Manchester United. Despite previous expectations of a transfer, Fabrizio Romano stated that there are “concrete, strong, likely chances” of Rashford staying. He is reportedly not interested in offers from clubs in Turkey or Saudi Arabia at this stage of his career, regardless of the financial proposals.
Rashford had reportedly pre-agreed personal terms with Barcelona, hoping the club would activate a €30m / £26m option to buy from his loan agreement. However, Barcelona ultimately signed Anthony Gordon instead. His current wages are also noted as a potential obstacle for many European teams considering a move. Rashford is under contract at Old Trafford until the summer of 2028.
Michael Carrick is reportedly a significant factor in Rashford’s potential to stay, as he is said to be happy to continue working with the player and offer him another opportunity. This suggests that Rashford will have a role to play under Carrick in the 2026–27 season, assuming no bids are received before the transfer window closes.
Manchester United still has work to do in the final three weeks of the summer transfer window, with a third midfielder and a new left-back reportedly on the agenda.
