Mandhana leads Manchester Super Giants to victory after Litchfield’s dropped catch

Manchester Super Giants secured a victory against Leeds Sunrisers, chasing down 143 runs with four balls to spare. The match saw a significant moment when Phoebe Litchfield of the Sunrisers dropped a crucial catch, allowing Smriti Mandhana to continue her innings and guide the Super Giants to a win.
The Leeds Sunrisers had set a target of 142 for 4. In response, the Manchester Super Giants were at 4-68 at the mid-point of their innings after losing two wickets in three balls. Mandhana, who had scored 30 off 21 balls, was considered a key wicket. When she pulled a delivery to Litchfield at mid-wicket, bowler Jess Jonassen anticipated a dismissal. However, Litchfield, who had to move forward slightly, dropped the catch.
Despite Jonassen dismissing Mady Villiers two balls later, Mandhana capitalized on the dropped chance. She went on to score 58 runs off her next 28 balls, ultimately leading Manchester to a total of 147 for 6. Mandhana finished with an unbeaten 88 off 50 balls, marking the highest individual score of the match.
Australia’s Meg Lanning, captain of the Super Giants, was the only other player for Manchester to reach double figures, contributing 24 off 18 balls. Lanning herself was dropped when she was on six runs. She acknowledged that the Super Giants, who have now secured two wins with one match washed out, still have areas for improvement.
Lanning commented on Litchfield’s dropped catch, stating that such moments are part of the game, where sometimes a team gets lucky and other times a batter is dismissed by an excellent catch. The Sunrisers, after being put in to bat, lost Jonassen early, who was run out after Maitlan Brown deflected Bryony Smith’s drive onto the stumps.
Litchfield had another opportunity to be dismissed early in her innings but was dropped at backward point when she had scored just one run. While she did not fully capitalize on this second chance as Mandhana did, Litchfield still managed to score 31 off 26 balls before being caught at long-on. Annabel Sutherland then took over, scoring 35 off 23 balls before miscuing a shot to wide mid-off. Sutherland had hit Brown for 10 runs in the preceding three balls. Brown finished with figures of 1-27 off 20 balls.
Lanning initiated the chase for the Super Giants with a six and two fours but was eventually caught by Sutherland. The Sunrisers appeared to be in a strong position when four wickets fell for 14 runs, including Brown being run out for a duck after facing one ball due to a poor call by Mandhana. However, Mandhana’s subsequent performance helped overcome this setback.
Mandhana’s move to the Manchester Super Giants for the Women’s Hundred edition has been a notable development in women’s cricket. This transition has generated considerable discussion among fans, with some initially believing she had left her Women’s Premier League (WPL) team, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), to join a different franchise. However, it has been clarified that Mandhana remains a part of the RCB family in the WPL while also playing for the Super Giants in The Hundred.
The announcement of Mandhana joining the Super Giants was widely shared online, with many fans expressing surprise. The situation highlighted the distinction between player participation rules in different leagues, as female players from India are permitted to participate in other T20 leagues, a rule that does not apply to male players unless they have retired. Mandhana’s performance in this match, particularly her unbeaten 88, showcased her impact on her new team.
The Super Giants‘ captain, Meg Lanning, expressed satisfaction with the team’s ability to secure wins despite not playing their best cricket, viewing it as a positive indicator. The team’s next steps will involve further gelling and improving their performance on the field.
