Arsenal agree £75m fee for Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes

Arsenal strengthens midfield with Guimaraes acquisition
Arsenal has reached an agreement with Newcastle for the transfer of their captain, Bruno Guimaraes, for a fee of £75m. The Brazilian midfielder has been granted permission to travel for a medical examination. Guimaraes had previously informed Newcastle officials of his desire to join Arsenal if a suitable offer were to be made.
This move follows Arsenal’s recent Premier League title win, their first in 22 years, and an appearance in the Champions League final where they were defeated by Paris St-Germain. Manager Mikel Arteta had emphasized the need for ambitious recruitment to build on the club’s success, and the signing of Guimaraes is seen as a key step in achieving that goal.
Arteta has consistently sought players with prior Premier League experience who have demonstrated the ability to perform at the highest level. The addition of the 28-year-old Guimaraes is expected to bring Arsenal closer to their objective of assembling one of the strongest midfields in global football.
Reasons behind Arsenal’s interest
Several factors contributed to Arteta’s decision to pursue Guimaraes, aiming to ensure Arsenal can compete effectively on multiple fronts. The club’s previous season was significantly impacted by injuries, and despite a substantial spend of £250m in the last summer transfer window, player robustness has remained a crucial consideration in recruitment.
Arsenal played 63 games across all competitions last season and has since restructured its medical department in preparation for the new campaign. The previous summer’s acquisition, Christian Norgaard, who is reportedly moving to Everton, made only seven appearances and one start in the league, indicating a lack of trust from Arteta.
This situation placed considerable strain on midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Declan Rice. Zubimendi eventually dropped out of the squad as the demands of his workload took a toll during the season’s latter stages. Rice, who played the most minutes of any outfield player at Arsenal last season and helped England reach the semi-finals of the World Cup, has been managing a hamstring issue. The arrival of Guimaraes is expected to provide depth and ensure quality is maintained even with squad rotation, while also elevating the overall standard of the midfield.
Arteta is known for demanding high intensity in training. With Guimaraes joining a midfield that already includes Rice, Zubimendi, captain Martin Odegaard, Eberechi Eze, Mikel Merino, Myles Lewis-Skelly, and Ethan Nwaneri, competition for places is expected to be significant.
Guimaraes’ impact and leadership qualities
Arsenal’s leadership group currently supports club captain Odegaard, and the addition of Guimaraes is expected to introduce a natural leader to the squad. Guimaraes became a pivotal figure for Newcastle during his tenure at St James’ Park. His ability to connect with supporters and his overall impact are seen as valuable assets for Arteta, who seeks to maximize every possible advantage.
Injury concerns have affected Arsenal’s campaigns in the past, but Guimaraes has missed only 16 Premier League games since joining Newcastle in 2022. Data from Opta highlights his importance to Newcastle, showing that the team’s win percentage, points per game, average goals scored, and average goals conceded are all notably better when he features.
Specifically, Newcastle’s win percentage is 50.7%, points per game is 1.7, average goals for is 1.9, and average goals against is 1.3 when Guimaraes plays. These figures are significantly higher compared to when he is absent, where the win percentage drops to 12.5%, points per game to 0.7, average goals for to 0.8, and average goals against rises to 1.6.
Last season, Guimaraes was Newcastle’s top scorer in the league with nine goals. He also contributed four assists for Brazil at the World Cup in his five starts. Despite missing six games due to a hamstring injury late last season, he still ranked among the top five players in the league for defensive line-breaking passes, with 46, and through balls, with 21.
He also led Newcastle in passes made under high-intensity pressure, recording 998 such passes, which underscores his willingness to take responsibility. Staff at Newcastle have described him as an “inspirational” figure, and Arsenal hopes he can replicate this influence at Emirates Stadium.
Guimaraes joined Newcastle in 2022 from Lyon for £40m, making 195 appearances and scoring 31 goals for the club. He has two years remaining on his contract, with an additional club-held option for a third year. Newcastle had initially been keen to retain Guimaraes, but if the deal proceeds as anticipated, the club stands to gain over £240m from player sales this summer. This includes the transfers of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona for £69.3m and Sandro Tonali to Spurs for £100m. Manager Eddie Howe also departed during what has been a challenging summer for Newcastle.
Newcastle had insisted on their valuation for Guimaraes, aiming for a fee that would be among the highest paid for a player aged 28 or older. The club also required that the transfer process be handled appropriately, with Guimaraes attending Newcastle’s training camp in Spain on Monday. Reports indicate that Guimaraes has complied with these demands. Initial discussions in June mentioned a deal worth £40m-£45m, but Newcastle rejected these pushes.
This acquisition is considered a significant statement by Arsenal. While Arsenal’s midfield is already strong, Guimaraes’ arrival is seen as an upgrade. His presence could allow Declan Rice to rest in certain matches following his demanding season. The deal for Guimaraes was completed for a fee below the reportedly desired £100m at the start of the transfer window.
Although Guimaraes will be 29 in November, Arsenal’s strategy is focused on immediate success. His consistent performance in the Premier League suggests he will not require a settling-in period. His arrival is expected to enhance Arsenal’s chances of winning a first Champions League title and retaining the Premier League title.
If Arsenal can further strengthen by adding a left winger, it could pose a significant challenge to their title rivals. Guimaraes’ medical examination is expected to proceed following the agreement of the £75m fee.
