AIFF Executive Committee confirms India’s participation in Brazil friendly and FIFA ASEAN Cup

The All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) Executive Committee convened at the Football House in New Delhi on Thursday, August 6, 2026. Chaired by AIFF President Shri Kalyan Chaubey, the meeting addressed several key decisions, including India’s international fixtures and domestic league preparations.
A significant outcome of the meeting was the confirmation of India’s participation in two upcoming international events. India will play a men’s international friendly against five-time FIFA World champions Brazil in Kolkata on October 3, 2026. Concurrently, India is set to compete in the FIFA ASEAN Cup in Indonesia from September 24 to October 3, 2026. The Executive Committee decided that separate squads would be fielded for both competitions.
International Fixtures and Squad Decisions
The Executive Committee views the match against Brazil as a unique chance for Indian players to gain exposure against one of the world’s top footballing nations during the FIFA International Match Window. This decision, however, has drawn debate, with former Indian captain Bhaichung Bhutia expressing opposition. Bhutia, who attended the Executive Committee meeting, argued that the FIFA ASEAN Cup should be the primary focus, as it offers competitive experience against regional rivals like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
Bhutia also raised concerns regarding the financial commitments for the Brazil friendly. He noted that the AIFF plans to make an advance payment to Brazil, with the understanding that this amount could be reimbursed through sponsors. Bhutia questioned the federation’s risk assessment, particularly given that Indian football is reportedly facing financial challenges, including a deficit from the previous season and struggles for clubs to secure sponsorship.
Despite these concerns, India captain Sandesh Jhingan views the match against Brazil as a major opportunity. He stated that athletes crave such a big stage and the chance to compete against the world’s best players. Defender Akash Mishra echoed this sentiment, suggesting that a strong performance could inspire more youngsters and demonstrate progress in Indian football.
Lallianzuala Chhangte, who has extensive experience with the national team, initially found the news hard to believe. He expressed excitement about the prospect of sharing the pitch with a team like Brazil, whose legendary players he grew up watching. Chhangte emphasised the importance of fighting for the country and aiming for a positive result.
Domestic Football and Appointments
Beyond international engagements, the Executive Committee also reviewed preparations for the Indian Super League 2026-27 season. Following the adoption of a new club-led commercial model, members received updates on the operational planning by participating clubs and the Federation. An extended deadline until August 12, 2026, was granted to Jamshedpur FC to reconsider its decision regarding participation.
The AIFF Technical Committee’s recommendation for the appointment of Bibiano Fernandes as the head coach for the India U15 men’s national team was approved, pending his acceptance. This team is slated to participate in the inaugural FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival in October in Azerbaijan. Ranjit Bajaj was approved as the team manager for the contingent, which will consist of six staff and 14 players.
A proposal from the Competition Committee for a revamped three-tier format for the Santosh Trophy and the Rajmata Jijabai Trophy was not approved. The Executive Committee cited concerns about competitive opportunities and player development. The Competition Committee has been asked to revise its proposal for future seasons, meaning no changes will be made to the format of these tournaments for the 2026-27 season.
The AIFF’s budget for the period of June 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027, was also approved. Additionally, the AIFF Secretariat informed the Executive Committee about notifications from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Government of India, regarding the adoption of the National Sports Governance Act, 2025. Member Associations with upcoming elections have been requested to comply with the new regulatory framework by October 20, 2026.
Concerns Over Indian Football’s State
Bhaichung Bhutia highlighted that Indian football is currently facing significant challenges. He mentioned that clubs are struggling to secure sponsors and noted the withdrawal of Jamshedpur FC from the ISL. Bhutia also pointed out that the budget presented for the last season showed a deficit of Rs 14 crore.
Akash Mishra acknowledged that Indian football has seen better days, with clubs facing closures and uncertainty surrounding top-tier leagues. He also noted that the national team has won only one of its last 11 games, leading to supporter disappointment. However, Mishra believes that games like the one against Brazil offer invaluable experience and a chance for players to learn from high-level competition.
The FIFA ASEAN Cup, introduced by the global governing body, aims to enhance football in Southeast Asia by providing competitive international matches. India was invited to this tournament alongside China and Hong Kong, though China declined the invitation. India has been drawn into Group A of Division 1, or the Premier Division, where they will face Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore.
The Executive Committee’s decision to field two separate teams for the FIFA ASEAN Cup and the friendly against Brazil was made to accommodate both events, which are scheduled to overlap between late September and early October 2026.
